Landscaping
If you are thinking about starting a major landscaping project then you might want to consider hiring a professional landscape designer like us. It is well worth the fees involved to be able to draw on a landscape design professional's expertise. And it may be quite surprising for a first-timer to learn just how much is involved in planning for your new landscape before the first shovel of soil is even turned.
All the necessary issues are sure to be covered in the landscape plan and you won't likely find yourself hitting a gas line while you're digging a hole or having five extra evergreen bushes because you measured your space improperly. We will take care of the grunt work and you will be free to concentrate on the fun stuff choosing plants and deciding how you want to use your landscape to it's fullest potential.
When you have your initial meeting with Jeff you will be discussing the size of the project, your ideas of what you'd like to have done and the kind of plants and architectural elements you have in mind. Your landscape professional will need a copy of your lot plan so they know exactly how much room they have to work with and where the boundaries are. Utilities will be marked on the blueprint to avoid interfering with them when planting begins. You should make it clear if any existing plants on the property are to be removed or incorporated into the new landscape design. Based on all the info gathered in this meeting, you and Jeff will set a budget for the landscape project.
Interstate Design Landscaping will prepare a design agreement for you to sign. This written agreement will help ensure that you and Jeff both have the same understanding of what is expected from this project and the cost and timeline involved.
When all the planning is complete and the paperwork is signed you will be ready to get started with your new landscape project.

Water Features
Water is one of the most interesting and dramatic elements to include in a garden. A trickling stream or a tranquil pond bring forth all that can be enjoyed each and every day when placed within your sight. It takes a lot of effort and skilled oversight to create water features that are truly inspirational. To imitate natural waterfalls and pools we select stone with realistic proportions and attractive form and patina and position them in credible rhythm with the environment. So that our clients can enjoy their water features in all seasons, we take care to use stable, frost-free foundations of steel-reinforced concrete in most cases, securing the stones so they will not dislodge during the natural Central Pennsylvania winter frost.
Fencing and Retaining Walls
When it comes to fences, whether for privacy, security, children or pets, we can make it happen. Gates that are designed for your equipment to pass through is another thing that some never think of until it's to late. What ever type of fence it needs to add to your landscape in addition to accomplishing your practical needs.
Retaining walls are an ideal way to alter topography and manage water drainage. There are many types of retainer walls to consider including type of construction, materials to be used and esthetic values. The primary consideration should be the type footing for the terrain and height. The specific uses are unlimited. In the case below the retaining wall served a variety of purposes such as pulling excess rain water away from the home by adding drainage pipes under the retaining wall that exits, without being seen, on the outer end to the right of the wall. It also created an area so the pool and patio are now level with the home as well as producing a fenced in area for additional safety and beauty.
Decks and Patios
A well constructed deck or patio can add more room to your home while adding to its beauty and value. A summer Barbeque is so much more fun when you can enjoy it out back on your newly constructed deck from Interstate Design Landscaping. Jeff and the crew know how critical it is to build decks correctly for the safety of you, your family and your guests. Incorrect construction can cause rot to the deck or connected structure, or collapse under heavy or uneven loads. Joist hangers used on a fix structure, such as the house is the best solution. However, a free standing deck will not cause leaks on the structure it's attached to. Remember, connecting the deck to columns or posts, and the floor joists correctly are critical. Also, the spacing of the vertical uprights for the hand rails must be small enough so toddlers can't fall through or get their heads stuck between them. To lay out a patio properly it is very imortant to maitain a level working area so that the pavers, bricks or stones last through the years without coming apart or becoming un-level. There is no need to worry about any of that once Jeff is on the job. From beginning to end we take special care to maitain your new decks or patios beauty, versatility and safety so it will last a lifetime.
